Health Services

District Nurse’s Main Duties Include:

  • Control of communicable disease through enforcement of the California state laws covering students obtaining and having proper immunizations.
  • Screen and evaluate findings in vision, hearing, scoliosis, growth, and coordinate with local dentists for student dental screening.
  • Interpret the health status of pupils to parents and school personnel.
  • Referral of health problems for remediation.
  • Provide ongoing health counseling.
  • Referral of students and families to the proper community resources.
  • Evaluation and report of findings for Individualized Education Programs (IEP's).
  • Make home visits to obtain information and assist families as it pertains to their health.
  • Assist students with medications at school.
  • Assist students with injuries or who are ill at school.
  • Serve as a resource person to staff and families.
  • Health education.
  • Liaison between home, school, and community.

Medication Information

California state law (Ed Code 49423) states medication, prescription and/or over the counter, cannot be administered by school employees without a physician’s order, signed permission from the parent or legal guardian, and properly labeled medication. Forms for this purpose are available in the school health office. Only medication prescribed by a physician may be left in the health office. The physician may authorize the student to carry and self administer emergency medication such as inhalers, nebulizers, EpiPens, glucagon and other diabetic testing supplies.
