"Every Child is a Star"

GATE

The Central Union School District is committed to an appropriate educational experience for our highest ability students. We believe that the innate abilities of gifted students must be developed and nurtured through participation in an exciting and challenging program of differentiated instruction centered on a curriculum that meets or exceeds state content standards.

The responsibility for identifying Gifted and Talented students is the collaborative effort of the CUSD Curriculum Department and the school site staff. The GATE identification process begins in 5th grade in the Central Union School District. All grade 5 students are screened for GATE Identification purposes providing parent permission is granted. Those students who meet specified criteria are enrolled in the GATE Program, which services 6th – 8th grade students. Teachers and/or parents may nominate 6th – 8th grade students for screening.

The Curriculum Department reviews documentation for K-5 transfer students already identified as GATE by another district.   Once GATE identification is
verified and criteria is reviewed, parents will be notified by the CUSD Curriculum Department. Sites ensure that qualified students receive appropriate differentiated instruction.

The California Department of Education recommends a model called "cluster grouping." All identified students are placed in cluster groups within the regular classroom. This model allows for students to have the opportunity to interact with students of all abilities, while still receiving appropriate differentiated instruction and the chance to work, when appropriate, with students of similar abilities. Teachers differentiate the core curriculum for GATE students by modifying content (what students learn), process (how they learn it), and product (how they demonstrate the acquired knowledge). The curriculum emphasizes critical and creative thinking skills, research skills, and problem solving skills.

In grades 6 through 8 students are screened on a referral basis.
